Skelly’s Quest!

Published by Manning on February 24th, 2020

Okay, this one’s not a paper mache project, but since this blog is basically where I post all my creative stuff these days, I’m gonna write about my newest creation: Skelly’s Quest! It’s a retro-style metroidvania platformer browser game thing. I did all the art and animation and level design — everything but the programming and music/sounds; those were done by my friends Chris Moody and Robbie Davis. You can play Skelly’s Quest here!

Skelly the-horse-skeleton-on-wheels is the mascot of Skeleton Krewe, and if you’ve been reading this blog you’ll know that’s the Mardi Gras marching krewe I’ve been in for the last eight years. I got the idea for this project as a tribute to Skelly and the krewe probably around autumn of 2019, but I wasn’t sure I could actually get the game made — although pixel art has been a hobby of mine for many years, and I get a kick out of making up concepts and artwork for old-school platformer games, most of the time they never really turn into anything, since I’m not able to do the programming myself. So I was really thrilled to get my friends Chris and Robbie on board around the end of the year to help create the actual playable game in time for Mardi Gras 2020.

Anyway, here are a few screens of the pixel art from the game:
