Tons of fake furniture and props for my seancé-themed Halloween party

Published November 11th, 2016

I made lots of fake furniture and other spooky haunted floating props for our seancé-themed Halloween party; some info on these below! You can also see our animated invitation here.

Paper maché floating table and chairs

For this floating upside-down scene with the table and chairs and crystal ball, I wanted to keep everything as lightweight as possible...

I made the table and chairs by cutting out lots of foam board shapes, taping them together, and covering them with just one layer of paper maché. Then I spray painted them black.

Glowing crystal ball prop

I made the base of the crystal ball with foam board and tape and one layer of paper maché. The ball itself is an acrylic light cover. I filled it with plain white plastic shopping bags and some battery-powered lights that pulsed and changed color.

I hung the table and chairs on the ceiling with fishing wire. And I attached the crystall ball to the table so it would float a couple inches lower than the surface of the table.

Floating haunted books

I made these floating books with some poster board and some printed out fake pages; the books are totally hollow. I hung them on our ceiling with fishing line.

Paper maché mantel and fireplace

I made this mantel out of foam board and paper maché. The fire didn't work as well as I'd hoped; I made some flames made out of crepe paper and underneath I set up a small electric fan and and a small light fixture with an orange lightbulb. The effect was okay but not perfect.

Paper maché floating nightstand and lamp

Just like the table and chairs above, I made this nightstand out of foam board and tape and one layer paper maché...

I made the lamp base by putting plastic wrap and paper maché around a plastic bottle, let it dry, and then removed the bottle. I made a fake lightbulb out of a small soda bottle, and I filled it with crepe paper with a tiny battery-powered light in the middle.

I hung the table on the ceiling with fishing line, and I hung the lamp a couple inches below the surface of the table. I also bought a lightweight fake wine glass to hang from the table!
